Chao, Yi Simi Valley 71
Yi Chao was always on the move. Whether he was helping out at his family's donut shop in Simi Valley, working in his beloved garden or holding BBQ for his friends, he was always active, said his daughter Mey Chao. "He was a strong man, he didn't feel at all old," she said of her father, who was 71. "My dad lived life to the fullest." Chao fled his native Cambodia 26 years ago when the Khmer Rouge was in power. He came to the US and eventually landed in Southern California, where other members from his family were. Over the years, hed go back to his homeland but he made California his new home. "He always said he loved it here," his daughter said. He loved toiling in his garden, where he grew flowers, fruits and vegetables. When he wasn't helping with the family business, the Donut Cafe, on the corner Los Angeles Avenue and First Street, he'd host gambling nights as his house with his friends. He was returning on the train after an eye appointment when the accident happened.
